João de Deus Kindergarten
Associação de Jardins-Escolas João de Deus

Architecture - Engineering
This project aims to expand and alter the João de Deus kindergarten building, at Rua 1 ° de Maio, in Matosinhos.
The present proposal aims to broaden the existing offer, (currently provides education services from pre-school through the first cycle) until the second cycle of schooling.
This claim is framed by a strategic "plan" for the whole of the premises, so that, in a concerted and coherent way, the program of adaptation of the whole of the spaces to the legislation and recommendations in force will be followed up, thus cautioning future interventions. The premises that had only one building were enlarged, adding new buildings to the needs of the institution, using the existing spaces, but without an apparent relationship and functional coherence. At this point, it seems necessary, with the opportunity of this intervention, to give meaning and unity to the whole, improving its operation and operating costs.
With a view to achieving these objectives, in order to cause the least possible impact on the existing exterior areas, and seeking a correct urban insertion, it was decided to implement a new building, attached to the existing one on the 1st of May to the west street. This option, giving continuity to the alignment and strength, but with the ground floor leaked, allows a visual permeability and demassification of the building, giving it lightness and maintaining the image of the existing building that will be noticeable in the 2nd plane. It is thus still possible to expand the total area of covered and discovered recreation, taking advantage of the coverage and the leaked of the new building, for this purpose.
The image intends to be the summary of these concerns of resolution of the framing and urban closure of the pretension, associated to the distinctive character that is intended to print, as an identifier element of the associated object.
